CASE STUDY:
Cosmetic Oil Based Slurry
Pump:
Waukesha Cherry-Burrell Brand – Universal 2 Series PD Pump
Industry:
Cosmetics Manufacturing
Problem:
Transferring abrasive, low viscosity product. The abrasive product caused excessive wear and pre-mature failure of the existing lobe style pumps. In the production of an antiperspirant stick, a large cosmetics manufacturer had a problem moving an oil base slurry containing abrasive talc and aluminum chlorhydrate particles to a filler. In this application the pump continuously feeds product in a closed loop to the filler. The product is also heated at all times to prevent the solids from settling and solidifying.
Solution:
The Waukesha Model U2-030 pump with single mechanical seals was selected to replace the existing pumps for the application. The unique features of the External Circumferential Piston (“ECP”) style rotors provide a long slip path which has proved to efficiently pump low viscosity product (50-500 cps) without allowing product to “slip” back through the tight clearances of the pump. The reduced slip minimized the erosive pump wear. The selection of this WCB brand U2-030 pump allowed the customer to maximize process uptime and minimize total cost of ownership.
